Chapter 8: Tools & Accessories
Complete accessories checklist, installation tools, testing equipment, and consumables required for surveillance structured cabling projects.
8.1 Accessories Checklist
A complete accessories kit is essential for efficient installation and long-term system maintainability. The checklist below covers all consumable and reusable accessories required for a typical surveillance cabling project. Quantities should be calculated based on project scale, with a 10–15% overage for consumables to account for waste, re-work, and future additions. The image below provides a visual reference for all standard accessories.

8.2 Installation and Testing Tools
Professional installation and testing tools are required to achieve certified channel performance and to document the system for warranty and acceptance purposes. The table below lists all required tools, categorized by function. Rental of high-cost test equipment is acceptable for single projects; however, teams performing multiple projects per year should invest in ownership to ensure availability and calibration currency.
| Tool Category | Tool | Specification | Purpose |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cable Termination | Punch-down tool (110 type) | Impact type, with 110 blade | Terminating Cat6A to patch panel and keystone |
| Cable Termination | RJ45 crimp tool | For Cat6A pass-through or standard connectors | Field-terminating patch cords |
| Cable Termination | Cable stripper (adjustable) | For 4–9 mm OD cables | Stripping Cat6A jacket without damaging pairs |
| Fiber Termination | Fiber cleaver (precision) | ±0.5° cleave angle | Preparing fiber ends for splicing or connectors |
| Fiber Termination | Fusion splicer | Core alignment, <0.02 dB splice loss | Splicing OS2/OM4 fiber backbone |
| Cable Testing | Cat6A channel certifier | Fluke DSX-8000 or equivalent; TIA-568.2-D | Certifying all copper horizontal runs |
| Fiber Testing | OTDR (Optical Time Domain Reflectometer) | 1310/1550 nm; 40+ dB dynamic range | Testing fiber backbone end-to-end |
| Fiber Testing | Optical power meter + source | Calibrated; ±0.2 dB accuracy | Measuring insertion loss at each connector |
